Get ready for World Thinking Day 2010!

25 January 2010

WTD 2010 badge- EnglishWe call on all our members and friends to celebrate international Girl Guiding and Girl Scouting on 22 February and to raise funds to support girls and young women around the world. The theme for World Thinking Day 2010 is girls worldwide say “together we can end extreme poverty and hunger”. This ties directly to our Global Action Theme (GAT), which is linked to the United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), in particular MDG1: ‘Eradicating Poverty and Hunger’.

The money raised and sent to WAGGGS is used for the development of non-formal education programmes, supporting the work of Member Organizations to carry out projects and advocacy campaigns, and to sponsor young delegates at international events. The funding will also ensure access to training for girls and young women across the world so they can develop international leadership skills. For the first time we are focusing on five countries, one from each region: Haiti, Zimbabwe, Sudan, Georgia and the Maldives.

There are so many things you can do to raise money - there are lots of ideas on the Thinking Day website.

Many of you have already started working on the World Thinking Day theme by participating in two global campaigns that took place in October: Stand Up and Take Action and World Food Day. We look forward to hearing about the culmination of your campaigns on World Thinking Day.  Send all your World Thinking Day stories to elisenda@wagggsworld.org

Tell us about your World Thinking Day experiences!

We would love to hear from Girl Guides and Girl Scouts about their plans forWorld Thinking Day and about how their units have made a difference in the community. We will develop their answers into case studies of girls and young women and the Guiding and Scouting experience in different countries.

If you are interested in participating in this activity, please could you confirm your interest by sending an email to Vanessa@wagggsworld.org by 29 Jan 2010. Vanessa will then work with you to identify a specific candidate for the story, then help to collect the information.

BEATRICE MWANIKI MACHARIA - 11 February 2010 - 8.59AM (GMT)

Towards this years Thinking Day KGGA Rift Valley staff sought to feed a poorly malnourished and HIV postive boy by the name of Jeff. He lives with his mother who was only 2 weeks old in her job and confessed that she was unable to feed her son. The staff took it upon themselves to take the boy to seek treatment and ensured that their home was provided with food to help the yung boy come out of the malnourished state and start seeking treatment since his weight did not allow him to be started on ARV's. The staff is committed to ensure the boy is fed, treated and lives to see many more days.
