The chat is one of the numerous activities in the run-up to International Day of the Girl and is part of 11 Days of Action leading up to the Day of the Girl Virtual Summit www.DayoftheGirlSummit.com.

11th of October, 2012 is the first International Day of the Girl. It aims to bring attention to girls’ rights and the unique challenges girls face due to their gender and age. Having a special day for girls emphasizes that the world is different for girls than it is for boys, as well as being different for girls than it is for women. WAGGGS is proud to have supported the campaign for this long-awaited day!

 

Here is what you can do in the run-up to the International Day of the Girl! 

  • Download WAGGGS International Day of the Girl Activity sheet  and organize or take part in one of these International Day of the Girl activities
  • Learn about the challenges girls face today and the opportunities that can make the world better for them with the help of our Fact sheet  
  • Get an overview of what International Day of the Girl is all about
  • Help us in building a vision of the perfect world for girls by submitting drawings, photos videos and text at The World We Want for Girls  blog.  This is a new blog created by WAGGGS to act as a visualisation of the perfect world for girls, created by young people all over the globe
  • Take our Survey on The World We Want for Girls.
  • Add you voice to WAGGGS Stop the Violence campaign at  www.stoptheviolencecampaign.com.  
  • Check out  www.saynotoviolence.org and add your name to become part of a global network of individuals and organizations working to end violence against women and girls.

 This year, on the International Day of the Girl, UN Women, along with other UN agencies, is focusing on the issue of child marriage. Globally, more than one in three young women aged 20-24 years are married before they are 18 years old, and one third of them enter into marriage before they turn 15. Child marriage is a fundamental human rights violation and impacts all aspects of a girl’s life.   It denies a girl of her childhood, disrupts her education, limits her opportunities, increases her risk of violence and compromises her health.
